Who doesn’t love the 80s or even the idea of that puffed up, big haired, fashion experimental decade? And with so many varied ingredients in a large mixing bowl, everything was stirred in nicely. Musically there was the likes of Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Metallica and Gun n Roses and not to forget The Psychedelic Furs, Bronski Beat, Paul Young and the iconic of all sing along songs , Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclyipse of The Heart” – the 80’s was far from a ‘look or sound alike’ decade.
On the catwalks the term Supermodels was coined with Naomi, Claudia, Elle, Iman, Christie all strutting their stuff and there were even huge anti-fur campaigns – some pretty graphic ones even on the TV.
Everything was big – Live Aid came to fruition, there were loads of collaborations and people were even wearing large lolly pink plastic earings – quality.
But I was a young lass in the 80’s, totally in love with my pink & white belt I used to wear with my side zipped mega tight black jeans and over sized singlet top. Perhaps I’m wearing my optimistic youthful glasses as I look back at that decade because the 80s was also littered with ongoing strikes and union disputes, the very scary AIDS campaigns and of course, the Challenger shuttle disaster to name a few darker moments.
Or maybe, just maybe there was a playful youthfulness which affected everyone during that time, after all, how could you possibly take a high powered executive seriously with those massive, deliberately placed shoulder pads.
To be continued….
