“Burlesque is entertainment whether it’s meant to be glamorous or comedic and unfortunately not everyone will appreciate it. I think that the majority of the audience love the references made to burlesque's history, the performer's take on classical routines and the evolution of the artform, being as risque as possible without being lewd” was Scarlett’s response when I told her that some people may not get Burlesque. I came across Scarlett Daggers at the London Tattoo Convention a few months back and really loved her routine.
Scarlett grew up in the Midlands and has been living in Nottingham for over 18 years now. She admits she was quite shy when she was younger but grew into herself, became more confident as she got older and has perfected the glamorous show-off that she is today. Asked what inspires her as an artist and the list is long including art and music, other performers both past and present. Her ‘Hot Rod’ act is inspired by Vince Ray’s artwork and custom culture which also plays with the traditional fan dance in which she uses 2 large racing flags as an alternative to feather fans.
Burlesque came to Scarlett several years ago when she was asked to pose for some pin-up/burlesque photos and her interest developed from there. She had always secretly loved old movies and musicals but wasn’t so aware of burlesque. To her it seemed very glamorous and a lot of fun so when the opportunity arose to become involved her thought was ‘why not’ and for nearly 4 years now Scarlett has performed all over the UK and even in Paris. Every aspect of her performances are her creation, occasionally bouncing ideas off friends and other performers. As she loves costuming, Scarlett also tries to make as much as she can herself but does get help with some things including a large prop that is currently being made for her at the moment.
I ask her ‘if there is something about her that people should know’ and her response is as classy as her performances “There is plenty of things people don’t know about me, that they should never know! A girl should never reveal her secrets!”
